Insulin is the hormone that lets your body use the sugar in your blood. Everyone makes it. In type 1 diabetes the cells that make it are destroyed, so injected insulin is not optional — it is the difference between living and not, and it is one of the most important medicines ever discovered. In type 2 diabetes the body still makes insulin but responds to it poorly, and insulin may be added when other treatments are no longer enough. It is prescription-only in Singapore and everywhere else: the dose depends on your body, your food, your activity and your other medicines, and only a doctor can set it.

#How it works

Insulin is a peptide hormone made by the pancreatic beta cells. It binds the insulin receptorreceptor — A protein a signal plugs into — like a lock that a specific key fits. (INSR), a receptor tyrosine kinasekinase — An enzyme that switches other proteins on or off by tagging them., which phosphorylates IRS proteins and switches on the PI3K/Akt arm — moving GLUT4 transporters to the cell surface so muscle and fat can take glucose out of the blood, switching the liver from making glucose to storing it as glycogen, and putting the brakes on fat breakdown. Injected insulin is the same molecule the body makes, produced by recombinant DNA, sometimes with small structural changes that alter how fast it acts.

#Protocol

Not something to self-direct.
