Nitric oxide / cGMP
In one line: A gas your body makes that relaxes blood vessels so more blood flows.
Picture this: Your blood vessels are like garden hoses. Nitric oxide is a signal that tells the hose walls to relax and widen — so more water (blood) flows through at lower pressure. More blood means more oxygen and nutrients reaching your muscles: that's the "pump" in the gym, better endurance, and healthier blood pressure.
What it really is: A simple but vital system. You can push it three ways: give the raw material (citrulline), give nitric oxide directly (beetroot), or stop the body from breaking down its "widen" signal (that's exactly how erectile-dysfunction drugs work).
Step by step:
- Raw material (arginine from citrulline, or nitrate from beetroot) is converted into nitric oxide.
- Nitric oxide raises a messenger called cGMP in the vessel wall.
- cGMP relaxes the muscle in the vessel wall, so the vessel widens.
- Blood flow rises and blood pressure drops.
Why it matters for you: Citrulline and beetroot are among the best-evidenced natural endurance and pump aids. The same pathway keeps blood pressure healthy and drives erections.
Turn it up: two ways — make more NO with citrulline and beetroot / nitrate, or stop breaking cGMP down with PDE-5 inhibitors (Viagra-type). One catch: don't combine strong versions (e.g. beetroot + ED drugs + nitrates) — blood pressure can crash.
Don't be fooled: antibacterial mouthwash kills the mouth bacteria that turn beetroot's nitrate into the active form — it can wipe out the benefit.
