Middle back

The muscles between the shoulder blades that pull them together and hold them onto the ribcage. They are the antidote to a rounded, hunched-forward posture.

Anatomy

Muscles: Rhomboids (major & minor), middle trapezius

Origin: Lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae (spinous processes).

Insertion: Medial (inner) border of the scapula.

Actions:

How the muscle works

They anchor the shoulder blade so the arm has a stable base. Every horizontal pull (row) retracts the scapula via these muscles; posturally they resist the shoulders drifting forward.

Fibre-type bias: Postural, endurance-biased (type I).

Functional role: Posture, shoulder-blade control, and a strong base for all pulling and pressing.

Common problems

Training & stretching

Rows, face pulls, scapular retractions, prone Y-T-W raises.

Cross-body reach; thoracic 'hug and round' between the blades.
